Here’s my new-year message.

Have you ever felt that you have so little time remaining in life? We all have a very limited number of years, winters, even Saturdays left, and the clock keeps on ticking. Life is too short, and it will surely end in the twinkling of an eye. Whatever we do, we cannot change this simple and naked reality.

However, we can try to live our remaining lives well-organized: In wealth of health and peace, having wonderful relations with family and friends, good for the society and our world.

Starting from 2012.

I wish you -an awesome new year's eve, plus- a happy, healthy, and prosperous new year.

Cheers,

Ahmet Kara

From archive: We now have 1,000 members!

Here is an important post of our group from our archive. I've posted the below discussion to the group on July, 2011. It's title is "Voila! -- Industrial Engineering in Turkey group now has ** 1,000 ** members". Original discussion is here.

---

Dear all,

Yes, we now have 1,000 members!! It took us roughly six months to double our group size from 500 members to 1,000 members.

We are among the biggest and most influential Linkedin groups of Turkey:
- We are in top-30 in terms of group size (among the Turkey-originated groups that have the keyword 'Turkey' in their introduction); and
- We are in top-15 in terms of growth (measured as new members added in last four weeks).

Besides, our standing improves day by day: Our growth rate averages around 10% every four weeks whereas others' average around 5%.

Let me share with you my prospects regarding our group size:
- 1,600 members by the end of 2011,
- 4,000 members by the end of 2012,
- 10,000 members by the end of 2013.

Some of you might think that becoming a group of 10,000 members in two and a half years is a tough target. In deed, it really is. Nevertheless,

- WE ARE A BIG COMMUNITY: I guess there are around 25,000 Turkish industrial engineers on the platform. Besides, we are open to everyone.
- OUR GROUP OFFERS REAL VALUE TO THE SOCIETY: Remember, our vision is feeding our society with rich industrial engineering perspectives.

These factors should lever our group up, and transform us from being a mid-sized group to becoming a big-sized one in the years ahead.

***

I strongly believe in the bright future of our group, and I will be working hard to add value to the group. Let’s work on this all together; I kindly ask three things from you:

1. This group is a huge asset for industrial engineering students and new-graduates, but usage of Linkedin is limited among them. If you are somehow connected to the academia, please do promote our group at your university.

2. Let’s promote our group at our personal networks: Share the discussions of our group at your social networks (as we are an open group, any discussion posted to the group is shareable on social networks such as facebook, twitter, or google+).

3. Our group address is http://www.linkedin.com/groups?about=&gid=2478520. Please consider forwarding this message to your network of friends.

Thank you for being a part of our group. We are richer with you.

Kind regards,

Ahmet Kara

From archive: Our group size reaches 500. Plus, our 2011 prospects

Here is an important post of our group from our archive. I've posted the below discussion to the group on January, 2011. It's title is "Our group size has reached 500 -- 2011 prospects". Original siscussion is here: http://lnkd.in/vvkB8N.

---

Dear all,

I have three issues to share with you today.

***

First of all, I am so happy to announce that our group size has reached ** 500 ** as of today.

It goes without saying, bringing together thousands of elite industrial engineering graduates and/or fans is not easy. But we IE’s are not for easy tasks, right? We are already 500 elite professionals here, and by saying elite, I am sincere: Have you checked the list of our group members lately? We have a good many of industrial engineering academics, plenty of managers from a wide array of sectors, and many specialists among others. Besides, our solid momentum of growth makes me feel confident about the future of our group.

I see our group as a continuously-improving tool which enriches our perspectives in many areas of our everyday lives by sharing and collaborating. Remember, our vision is feeding our society with rich industrial engineering perspectives.

***

My second issue is 2011 prospects from our group. I am considering/dreaming of the following targets/improvements in 2011:

- Breaking 1,000 level as the group size, and then, setting the target of becoming one of the top-10 groups of Linkedin in Turkey (meaning around 2,600 members by the second half of the year).

- Kicking off get-together events, and meeting face-to-face. Opening ourselves for new connections, new acquaintances, new friendships.

- Kicking off issue-of-the-month discussion series at which we will be asking some serious questions and seeking answers for the good of our society.

What other prospects might we have? I will be happy to get your feedback as comments to this discussion item.

***

My last issue is the promotion of our group. I kindly ask from you two things:

1. This group is a huge asset for industrial engineering students and new-graduates, but usage of Linkedin is so limited among them -- although it is crucial especially at this stage of life. Feeling so sad about this, I personally try hard to bring young professionals to Linkedin platform. Let’s do this together: If you are somehow connected to the academia, please do promote our group at universities.

2. Let’s promote our group at our personal networks. Remember, professionals from backgrounds other than industrial engineering are welcomed to our group as well. Our group address is http://www.linkedin.com/groups?about=&gid=2478520.

Please consider forwarding this message to your network of friends.

As we are an open group, any discussion posted to our group is shareable on facebook, twitter, and other social networks. Please do share the discussions of our group that you like at your social networks.

***

Thank you for being a part of our group. We are richer with you.

Kind regards,

Ahmet Kara

From archive: We're creating our subgroups together

Here is an important post of our group from our archive.

I've posted the below announcement to the group on January, 2011 when we were establishing our group's subgroups. It's title is "Three issues: Our vision statement, our subgroups, and collaboration needs".

The discussion belongs to the era when Linkedin Groups didn't have the so-called open groups functionality (articles were not shareable on the web, groups were "closed and exclusive clubs" only serving to their members). So there's no link to the discussion.

Yours truly,

---

Dear colleagues,

I would like to share with you three issues today.

First one is the fact that we have set our group's vision, values, and set of rules. You might have followed the discussion on the group throughout the week. You can reach our set of rules on the related section at the group, but let me restate the vision and values of our group here:

** Our vision is to feed our society with rich industrial engineering insight and perspectives. **

** Our values are honesty, feeling free to express views, welcoming feedback, and being open to change. **

I would love to have your feedback on our vision and values.

***

My second issue is our subgroups! Yes, we have been in the process of forming our subgroups.

I have created nine subgroups, of which you can find the details at our subgroups page (at http://www.linkedin.com/groups?subgroups=&gid=2478520), and they are as follows:

Industrial Engineers in Finance
Industrial Engineers in IT
Industrial Engineers in Sales and Marketing
Industrial Engineers in Manufacturing
Industrial Engineers in HR Management
Industrial Engineers in Quality Management
Industrial Engineers in Supply Chain Management
Industrial Engineers in Management Consultancy
Industrial Engineers as Entrepreneurs

I will be creating seven additional subgroups which are supposed to be as follows:

IE Concepts: Operations Research
IE Concepts: Statistics and Stochastical Processes
IE Concepts: Simulation
IE Concepts: Production Planning

Industrial Engineers in İstanbul
Industrial Engineers in Ankara
Industrial Engineers in İzmir

Please check our group's comprehensive set of subgroups from time to time to be able to get the most out of our group. Regarding the subgroups, please note that:

- Function-based subgroups (the already-formed ones) aim to bring together IE's who work at the same business areas, in order to enable them dig deeper on their business issues.

- Concept-based subgroups (the four in the middle group) aim to supply all of us with hardcore IE concepts, in order to feed all of us keep track of theory, related implementations, or the like.

- Location-based subgroups (the bottom three) are highly experimental, and aim to let us know of the IE's in the vicinity. If we have similar perspectives, why not get together physically, and share some more?

If you think that we should have some more subgroups please let me know, and we can decide together.

***

My third issue is that I need your collaboration in order to create the bottom seven subgroups due to Linkedin platform's limitations (you can own a maximum total of 20 subgroups).

If you would like to volunteer in taking the ownership role of a couple of all these subgroups, please let me know. I am in search of colleagues who are passionate about IE (like myself). It is so easy and always fun to moderate groups.

Remember, we will be building our group together, and now, it is time to collaborate.

***

Thank you once more for being a part of our group. We are richer with you.

Kind regards,

Ahmet Kara

From archive: We're setting our vision, values, and rules

Here is an important post of our group from our archive. I've posted the below discussion to the group on December, 2010. It's title is "Important: Our vision, values, and rules statements, plus a name change"

The discussion belongs to the era when Linkedin Groups didn't have the so-called open groups functionality (articles were not shareable on the web, groups were "closed and exclusive clubs" only serving to their members). So there's no link to the discussion.

---

Dear all,

As you might know, our group has been in the growth phase (by the way, thank you all for empowering such a momentum). At this phase of our group, I thought that setting explicitly our vision, values, and rules would be appropriate. I had spent some time on the issue, and here I am making the announcement.

First of all, please note that I am not an authoritarian type of person, and I prefer taking the decisions all together in our group. However, I have set our initial vision, values, and rules statements, just to have something to discuss on. These are all subject to change with your feedback.

Please find our vision, values, and rules statements below.

Our vision is to feed our society with rich industrial engineering insight and perspectives.

Our values are honesty, feeling free to express views, welcoming feedback, and being open to change.

Our rules are listed below (the list looks lenghty, but remember, rules are necessary to have healthy conversations which will enable our vision):

1. Every single one of us should be kind and respectful to other members of the group at all times.

2. Our discussions have been moderated effectively, and spamming is strictly forbidden. Spammers will be removed and banned from the group. However, educational material is not regarded as spam: Advertisements on educational and/or inspirational material such as books, events, conferences, webinars, trainings, groups, etc. which has some relation with industrial engineering is allowed and welcomed.

3. Regarding career opportunities, -thanks God- we have some HR people in the group. They have a crucial role in the platform, and hence, we respect and welcome them. However, job posts should be placed at jobs section of the group.

4. Regarding language, use either Turkish or English, whichever one you like. However, please note two things: First, you should be clear with your language for others to be able to understand you easily, and second, you should have at least intermediate level of English in order to be competitive in today’s world.

These all sound like we are the biggest community about industrial engineering in Turkey. We are in deed about to be the biggest one: It is unbelievable but true that currently, the biggest IE group on Linkedin has only 370 something members. Other than that, we have no organization in real life!!

In order to reflect this to our group's name, I have dropped "Professionals" from our group's name, and changed it to "Industrial Engineering in Turkey". Please provide feedback on this issue as well.

We will be thousands of industrial engineers in our group. We will be sharing, interacting, socializing, flourishing. We will be open to and feeding our society with rich industrial engineering insight and perspectives. I can see it. I can see us coming.

Thank you for being a part of it.

Best regards,

Ahmet Kara
